1/2 Day Spanish

June 18th, 2008

This was morning was alittle chilly compared to the Louisiana scorching heat.  The winds had switched to the North sending down some of the last artic air that we will be seeing this summer.  The 66 degree morning had cooled down the water 4 degrees and had the fish shut off.  It was up in the morning before the water warmed enough to interest the Spanish into eating our 00 Clark Spoons.  We ended the day with 20 Spanish, some pretty good size for this early in the year, and 3 Sharks.   The temperatures are susposed to be higher tomorrow, hopefully making the fish bite harder.  I have another 1/2 day tomorrow so stay tuned.  If you would like to book a charter, send me a hit on my Book a Charter button.  Tight Lines

Fourchon, Louisiana

I left last Tuesday with Team Holden On heading down to Fourchon, Louisiana to fish the 3rd leg of the Yamaha Professional Kingfish Tour.  We drove straight through, all 18 hours, just to be able to prefish Wednesday Morning.  At 8:00AM Wednesday we were jigging our first bluerunners, and heading offshore to prefish some rigs that had been productive in previous years.  Wednesday was a great day, the seas were calm and the fish were biting.  We ended up the day with several medium size king mackeral, being 35-40 pounds, and feeling good that we might be on to something.  Not the 50 pounders we were looking for, but good quality points fish.  Not only did we find the kings, but also got into several decent wahoo.  Shane caught the first wahoo, a nice fat 40 pounder.  This fish hit the downrigger set at 100 feet and preceeded to break in the new Daiwa’s like no other kingfish had done.  Once after the first blistering run, the fight was shortly over.  After gaffing this awesome fish I was putting out another line, when it went into over-drive.  I had a good feeling this was another wahoo, but felt that I definately was a better fish.  Twenty minutes later a fat 52 pounder was lying on the floor of the boat, not to bad for king fish tackle.

We fished alittle on Thursday, but spent most of the day catching enough bait for two tournament days.  Friday, the first day of the tournament was alittle snotty.  After lots of deliberation, the 38 foot Fountain was set a course for 42 miles dead into a 4 foot headsea.  The boat handled the seas like you would expect and had lines in at 7:45.  We fished hard all day and managed a 35 pounder, not awesome, but better than nothing.

Day two was alot different than day one.  The seas had laid out over night, which made for some easy running.  We changed gears and headed to a differerent area, one that had been very productive for some of our friends.   Due to the extremely hot temperatures and calm seas the fish didn’t cooperate to well.  Team Holden On could only muster a 29 pounder.  We didn’t get the high pounds that were expected, but came out with several good points fish.

Even though we didn’t bring home the first prize, the trip was overall successful.  I am going to post several pics from the week.  This coming week I have booked several charters, so stay tuned for more reports

BOTTOM FISH AND COBIA

June 6th, 2008

snapper.jpg

Today we had a  full day charter and decided to fish in the 100-110 foot depth range.  The grouper bit pretty well early this morning, but once the air temperature rose the grouper bite stopped.  We ended up the day with several grouper, cobia, king mackeral, and lots of triggerfish, b-liners, grunts, Pinky’s, and jacks.  I’ve got the same crew again tomorrow.  Were going after some Kings, Mahi, and maybe a grouper.  I’ll post all the pics tomorrow night, but for now this is the American Red Snapper that Chris Hutchens caught about 50 miles off of Holden Beach.

Big Sharks and Spanish Mackeral

June 4th, 2008

big-shark2.jpgbigshark1.jpg

Ran 1/2 day Fishing Charters on Tuesday and Wednesday just off of Oak Island.  The Spanish Mackeral have really schooled up in those areas.  On Wednesday we limited out in a three hour period.  Most of the Spanish have been caught on #1 planers and Clark Spoons.

Once we had our limit of Spanish, Sharks became our next target.  We ended the day with (2) 6′ 250 pound Lemon Sharks.  These rascals are probally one of the toughest fights an angler could have on 20# test gear.  If you would like to tangle with one of these big daddies now is the time.  If you would like to book a great Holden Beach fishing charter give me a call or shoot me an email.

Stay tuned, I have offshore trips on Thursday and Friday.  We are going to be targeting Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, King Mackeral, Black Sea Bass, Snapper, and Grouper.

Spanish Mackeral

May 28th, 2008

121200697371472.jpgThe Spanish Mackeral are here.  I had a 1/2 day charter fishing trip today and found the Spanish Mackeral off of Oak Island.  The fish were hitting 00 Clark Spoons.  Most of the fish hit on the planers, but caught our share up on top.  We ended up the morning with 25 keepers.  I heard reports that some grouper are biting, so stay tuned for more reports and pics.

Big King’s

May 26th, 2008

joshs-40.jpgWell it feels like summer is finally here. Over the past few days the weather has been awesome and the fish have been biting like bulldogs.  I have fished almost everyday out of Holden Beach and had great success everyday.  Most of my catch have been Vermilion Snapper (better known as B-liners), Black Sea Bass, Grouper,  Mahi, Amberjack, and King Mackeral.  One morning while fishing an offshore reef our party was suprised as the King Mackeral we were fighting turned out to be a real monster.   I’ll be fishing some more this week so stay posted for more reports. If you would like to book a charter or just talk fishing feel free to shoot me an email or just call.  Tight Lines!!!

Plenty of Sharks and Bass

May 18th, 2008

On Saturday I had a 3/4 day trip with some great guys from the Winston Salem area.  We were greated Saturday morning with gusty winds around 20 knots out of the north.  Because of the rough seas offshore we decided to fish nearshore at the Lighthouse area to catch some small Bass and Sharks while the winds diminished.  Here we caught a ton of throw back Black Bass and Sharks, but very few keepers.  Luckly these winds slowed and the seas had laid out enough to run about 28 miles offshore.   The deeper water was holding some nice Black Bass, Geniune Red Snapper, Chopper Bluefish, and plenty of Sharks.  Overall I would guess that we caught well over 100 fish.

The middle to latter part of the week is promising better weather.  The stable weather will have the fish hungary and feeding.  If you would like to get into some of this great action get a party together and lets go fishing.

Great Day

May 14th, 2008

Bass, AJ, and King mackeralBig ScampScamp and CobiaHad a 3/4 trip with a couple boys from the Lexington, N.C. area.  We had a great trip fishing in the 35 mile range.  Once we we were anchored on the rock, we had steady action of nice 3-4 pound, green head Black Bass.  Mixed in with the bass were B-liners and Grunts.  The action was so hot that I forgot to put out a light line.  Once I figured out something was missing and got a cigar minnow in the water, it didn’t take long to snag several King Mackeral and loose a couple more.

One of the boys caught a b-liner and I decided to put it down on the bottom.  About 3 minutes later the Penn 70 International on a bent butt rod was bowed over touching the water, the fight was on.  Vince grabbed the rod and begin to pump the big fish toward the surface.  At first I couldn’t tell who was winning, but after a few minutes a nice 40 pound Amberjack was in the boat.

With the warming weather all types of fish, including grouper and cobia are starting to migrate in to the 80-100 foot depths.  These awesome fighting and eating fish are a blast to catch.  I’m going to post two pics from a 07 spring trip.  I was fishing with two great friends Toby Fulford and Randy Robinson.  We loaded up on the Cobia and Scamp Grouper, you can tell by all the brown in the pic.  One of the Scamps would be a state record in South Carolina and Georgia.  North Carolina doesn’t recognize it as of yet, and I didn’t know that we could have set the bar, maybe next time.  The fish are biting, come  on down to the coast and lets go fishing.
